Medical Assistant or Patient Care Tech

The PCT/MA, under direct supervision of the Medical Assistant Coordinator, provides support to the prescribers, including individual prescriptions, triaging of clients, call backs, face to face monitoring, in addition to administrative functions. The PCT/MA coordinates services for behavioral health and private pay/insurance carriers, participates in quality improvement activities, and performs other duties as assigned by the Medical Assistant Coordinator in collaboration with the Director of Nursing. PCT: High School Diploma or GED AND at least one year of related experience. Upon hire, annually complete a competency review of stated job functions satisfactorily. MA: graduate of an accredited medical assistant program; current national Medical Assistant certification

Accountabilities

1.  Maintains established agency policies and procedures, performance improvement initiatives, safety, environment of care, management of information, productivity standards, and infection control standards.

2.  Utilizes excellent customer service skills at all times.

3.  Complies with federal and state law, accrediting and licensing agencies at all times, to include but not limited to, Joint Commission and federal compliance regulations.

4.  Interacts with clients in a culturally competent manner that takes into account factors such as age, developmental or acquired disabilities, religion and spiritual orientation, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, indigenous heritage, national origin, and gender.

5.  Complete verbal order from prescribers

6.  Measures and updates patient vitals, chief complaint, allergies, surgical history, social history, medical history and family history into the patients chart in the EMR.

7.  Verifies current medication list.

8.  Obtains test results, physician consults, ER reports, or RX history regarding patients.

9.  May assist Physician with procedures including, but not limited to:

a.  EKG

b.  Cerumen Removal

c.  Spirometry

d.  SVN Treatment

e.  Protime/INR

f.  HGB

g.  HGB A1C

h.  Glucose

i.  Rapid Strep

j.  Rapid RSV

k.  Rapid Influenza

l.  Urine Pregnancy

m.  Urinalysis

n.  Immunizations/Vaccinations

o.  Injections

10.  Collects lab specimens for cultures.

11.  Schedules test or procedures ordered by the provider.

12.  Calls patients about test result or procedure results after the provider reviews and informs what the results are.

13.  Provides call back to pharmacies and specialist as directed by providers.

14.  Manages faxes and messages regarding patients in EMR system.

15.  Returns patients calls with answers after consulting with the provider.

16.  Records and document all patient information regarding intake and messages into the patients chart.

17.  Prepares exam room for procedures (PAP smears, excisions, etc.) marks specimens for lab and pathology.

18.  Cleans exam room after each patient and stocks exam and procedure rooms with supplies.

19.  Performs lab controls daily and checks and records temperatures on lab refrigerator and freezer.

20.  Takes incoming calls from patients and medical advice after consulting with provider.

21.  Problem-solves patient issues.

22.  Completes specialty referrals and prior authorizations as needed

Competencies

1.  Ability to accurately check vital signs including weight, blood pressure, orthostatic blood pressure changes, pulse rate, respiratory rate, and body temperature.

2.  Ability to perform finger stick blood sugar monitoring.

3.  Ability to interact with clients, personnel, and outside agencies in a calm, logical, and positive manner

4.  Ability to interact with clients and families of all age groups.

5.  Ability to educate clients about the use of medications.

6.  Ability to assist in facilitation of care for both Primary Care and Behavioral Health clients. 

7.  Ability to recognize, prevent, and respond to a client who may be a danger to self or others, behaves in an aggressive manner, or is experiencing a crisis situation or medical emergency.

8.  Knowledge of the specific rights afforded to all SHG populations.

9.  Knowledge of how to and ability to communicate with clients who are nonverbal.

10.  Demonstrated ability to document accurately.

11.  Proficient in use of agency EMR

BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS

Employees of Spectrum Healthcare should be able to:  frequently sit for long periods of time, frequently move from one location to another within the clinic, occasionally carry a minimum of 15 pounds,  constantly participate in ordinary conversation, frequently participate in telephone conversation, be able to speak, read, and write fluently in English, have basic computer skills, have acuity in near and far vision, work under stress, work under strict time constraints, work under possible emergent situations, prioritize workload, evaluate personal/professional strengths/weaknesses in handling personal/professional frustrations. 

In addition, employees must: be able to obtain a Level 1 fingerprint card, be at least 21 years old.  All direct care staff must maintain current American Heart Association approved CPR/First Aid certification for healthcare providers.
